Scope and Topics: - The impact of drugs and alcohol in the workplace – A look at UK and international statistics. - What goes into a robust policy? – Similar to an exam essay plan, there are key areas the policy and associated procedures must detail. - Is there a place for testing? – Is having a policy sufficient to get compliance or is testing helpful to prove compliance? - Which biological sample should be used? – Urine is the longstanding biological sample for drug testing, however oral fluid is gaining popularity, what are the pros and cons? - The role of the Medical Review Officer – The safety net by which employers and employees alike rely on to interpret the drug tests accurately.

Helen Vangikar is an independent Toxicology Consultant who has worked in the field of analytical chemistry and toxicology since 1988 (www.helenvangikar.com).   Since 1994, Helen has developed a number of training courses, including her well respected Medical Review Officer (MRO) courses gaining Faculty of Occupational Medicine accreditation, for occupational health professionals.  These courses have been delivered to UK and International delegates, within the UK and overseas.    In addition to delivering her MRO training sessions, Helen works as an independent Technical Assessor for the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) and works with organisations to develop and introduce their drug and alcohol policies.
