Avon and Somerset Police, Force Medical Advisor (Part time 22 hrs per week)

Avon and Somerset Police is seeking a qualified Occupational Health Physician to work as its Force Medical Advisor. Become part of their dynamic team as they navigate transformation and adopt a fresh approach to collaboration. They have recently revamped their occupational health service to better cater to the needs of employees. The chosen candidate will play a key role in elevating the service, acting as a cornerstone in fulfilling their dedication to enhancing and sustaining a secure, healthy, and productive workforce.

The role:

Based at the Avon and Somerset Police Occupational Health Unit, near Police Headquarters in Portishead, this crucial role will provide expert Occupational Health advice and guidance to support the wellbeing of police officers, police staff and members of the special constabulary. 

Main Responsibilities:  

- Conducting medical appointments with employees, providing guidance to individuals and stakeholders on health-related prognosis in the context of work, and offering insights into potential return-to-work scenarios for those on sick leave.

- Provide a point of expert reference and review in development and implementation of relevant policies and procedures on Occupational Health issues particularly in response to legislative changes and recognised best practice.

- Working in collaboration with other members of the Occupational Health Unit, to advise on appropriate advice and guidance on prevention and treatment of work-related illness and injury.

- Provide relevant and practical advice to managers and HR on medical implications for staff in the workplace who experience complex health problems including mental health.

Essentials:

- Must be a Registered Medical Practitioner and substantial experience of occupational health.

- Either a Member, Fellow or an Associate of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine (MFOM/FFOM/AFOM) and belong to one of the Medical Protection Societies.

- Proficient in using computerised medical records, adept at electronic note-taking, and capable of independently generating correspondence.

Desirable:

- Experience of police occupational health work or other safety critical industries is advantageous, but not essential.

- Be familiar with both the police and local government pension schemes in order to advise HR and management and prepare cases for referral to the independent medical assessors.
