An exclusive CPD Accredited SOM Webinar by Dr Nick Jenkins who is Deputy Senior Doctor at the DVLA.
There are two driver licensing groups in the UK. A Group 1 licence confers entitlement to drive a car and/or motorcycle, whilst a Group 2 licence confers entitlement to drive a lorry and/or bus. There are currently 46 million Group 1 licence holders and 2.4 million Group 2 licence holders. 4.1% of licence holders have a declared medical condition. However, the system is primarily one of self-notification and this figure is likely to be an under estimate.
Medical conditions may impact upon road safety either by their liability to result in sudden impairment/collapse whilst driving, or because of problems that they pose with regard to the ability to control a vehicle safely. Because of the potential adverse impact of such conditions, it is necessary to impose medical standards of fitness to drive, those required for Group 2 driving being more rigorous than those required for Group 1.
In this webinar Nick will discuss the legal basis for those medical standards and their development, including the roles of the Honorary Medical Advisory Panels. He will describe how the system works in practice, including the means by which notifications are made and the role of DVLA’s Drivers Medical Group, which includes DVLA Doctors. he will also discuss the issues of doctor-patient confidentiality and GMC guidance regarding this issue.
