Brief summary: The 11th revision of the International Classification of Diseases has classified Burnout, not as a medical diagnosis, but as an "occupational phenomenon" under "factors influencing health status or contact with health services". This brings up the question of the relevance of keeping this syndrome in medical practice, as such classification impacts important outcomes for affected workers, such as compensation and treatment. During this presentation, we will provide a historical perspective on Burnout, discussing the contributions of Freudenberger and Maslach, and subsequently questioning the relevance of the concept of burnout in occupational medicine practice.
