SOM HAVS voluntary register

SOM HAVS voluntary register

If you would like to check whether an Occupational Health doctor or nurse is on the Register please contact admin@som.org.uk

SOM’s voluntary register for HAVS is for appropriately trained doctors or nurses demonstrating that they have met the training and competency requirements for health surveillance for a workforce exposed to hand-transmitted vibration, and in the diagnosis and management of an individual with HAVS . The Register aims to facilitate:

  • transparency as to Occupational Health and Medicine professionals who have the training and experience on HAVS assessments in workplaces. A certificate in Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) from FOM is an indication that the individual has completed a training course at an approved centre and has demonstrated the necessary competence in this area at the time of the exam, that is recognised by Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspectors.

  • access to relevant CPD and training on the latest HAVS issues for those on the Register e.g. via the SOM HAVS Special Interest Group

By being on a HAVS register you are confirming that you have the specific medical training, required regulatory requirements fulfilled, HAVS qualifications and / or HAVS patient experience which enables employers to make direct contact with a suitable occupational health and medicine professional to provide a HAVS assessment. Those on the register can indicate if they are willing to provide contact details so employers can contact them for contract in this area. HSE advises that tier 3 and above HAVS assessment and diagnosis in Great Britain cannot be undertaken by anyone other than an occupational health advisor/nurse (tier 3) or doctor (tier 3/4) or holding the appropriate UK registration. The Register is aimed at health professionals working in the UK occupational health setting, rather than in a medicolegal setting.
