Ministry of Defence Underwater Medicine Division, Consultant Occupational Physician

The Institute of Naval Medicine (INM) provides high quality Occupational Medicine to the Royal Navy and Defence. This is an exciting opportunity for an Occupational Physician to join a dynamic expanding Underwater and Aviation Medicine Department composed of healthcare professionals including junior doctors, Occupational Medicine registrars and consultants. The range of sub specialties includes Aviation, Diving, Hyperbaric, Submarine and Radiation medicine. Other departments in the INM include Environmental Medicine and Sciences with thermal medicine, exercise medicine, occupational hygiene, noise, vibration and audiology. Whilst it would be difficult to contribute in every area the opportunity exists to develop your knowledge, skills, experience, undertake research and to teach in a wide variety of sub specialties whilst delivering support to a wide range of activities.

The post holder will contribute to the support of operational commitments and will provide advice on occupational fitness to serve in the Royal Navy and Royal Marines. There is a teaching commitment, with UMD providing courses in Underwater Medicine to Service and civilian personnel. There is also a requirement to assist in the wider outputs of the Division including long term sickness and ill health retirement decisions. We are committed to high standards, with regular healthcare governance inspections and continuous quality improvement. The post holder requires full GMC Registration with a licence to practice and Specialist Register entry for Occupational Medicine. Whilst prior experience in radiation, diving and submarine medicine is highly desirable all aspects of training in the specialist aspects of occupational medicine will be provided.
